public art strategy concepts 92

In 1992 Jeanelle Hurst developed three public art strategy concepts for implementation pending technological advances for what were then thick screen CRT televisions.  Two of the works as per the images below required large-scale thin screens for embedding in walls and floors and the third work required a flexible moulded screen for use in the 3d sculpture of a hand emerging from the pavement.

The content for the first public art  concept shown here was to be sourced from video of a panoramic scene of waves washing against the coastline and animations of cars twisting and turning and dancing along the panel of screens embedded in the building – in unison with the flow of traffic along the street.  The content for the second strategy would be generated from video of a person swimming with the effect of a person swimming  through and under the floor of a high-rise building.  The content for the third strategy was to be sourced from broadcast television so that the surface of the hand would emanate the constantly changing content from mass media.
